Understand your spending
How much did I actually spend at Costco?
Choose a date range, add the receipt totals for purchases in that range, and subtract refunds recorded in the same range. That gives you net spending for the receipts you included. Check missing receipts before treating it as your full Costco spending.
Your card statement can help reconcile payments, but it does not show every item in a mixed Costco cart. Receipts let you separate groceries, household supplies, and a one-time purchase when you want to understand what changed.
A worked example: one month, three shopping trips
Fictional example · not a real household’s data
| Record | Amount | How to count it |
|---|---|---|
| August 3 warehouse trip | $182.40 | Purchase |
| August 15 warehouse trip | $146.85 | Purchase |
| August 23 online order | $59.99 | Purchase |
| August 28 refund | −$24.99 | Subtract once |
| August net spending | $364.25 | $389.24 in purchases − $24.99 returned |
This method includes receipt totals, including tax and delivery charges that appear in them. If a refund arrives in September, it belongs in September for this cash-flow view—even when the original purchase was in August. Use the same rule each month.
If you instead want the final cost of August’s purchases, attach later refunds to their original purchases. That is a different question. Label the method so two reports do not appear to disagree when they are answering different questions.
Did I buy more, or was there one unusual purchase?
Suppose July’s comparable net total was $280.00. August is $84.25 higher, an increase of about 30.1%. But suppose August also included a $90.00 household appliance. Setting that purchase aside leaves $274.25—$5.75 less than July.
That does not prove your routine shopping got cheaper. It tells you where to look next: quantities, item mix, returns, and any missing receipts. Comparing the same group of receipts and the same date rule matters more than a precise-looking percentage.
Check these four things before trusting a total
- Coverage: do you have each shopping trip and online order in the date range? A missing receipt is missing data, not zero spending.
- Returns: do not subtract a return again if the total already includes it.
- Payment method: count the purchase once. A Shop Card purchase, its later use, and a card payment are not three separate shopping trips.
- Channels: decide whether your comparison includes warehouse purchases, Costco.com orders, gas, and other services. Keep the boundary consistent.
Costco’s online warehouse history has coverage limits and is linked to the membership on the signed-in account. Check Costco’s receipt coverage guidance if a category or trip is missing.
Where does Haul Math help?
Haul Math organizes the receipts you import and shows basic spending, receipt coverage, and returns. Your local archive and basic totals stay free on iPhone and Android. The displayed history reflects imported receipts; it is not a connection to all your bank accounts or a complete household budget.
Optional Haul Math Plus adds more detailed spending views and receipt-backed item history. If a total surprises you, check the underlying receipts before changing your shopping plan. A useful first goal is simply to import a complete month and answer “what made this month different?”
